What Gives Us Hope in 2025

Project HOPE team members and health workers around the world share their most encouraging moments from 2024 and what gives them hope for the year ahead.

By Emma Schwartz

Every day, Project HOPE team members witness the resilience of local communities and the tireless efforts of health workers who are working to address the most pressing health challenges.

Like in Ukraine, where our teams have reached more than 477,000 patients across the country with primary, specialized, and mental health care.

And North Carolina, where Project HOPE distributed essential supplies like hygiene items, clean drinking water, and over-the-counter medications to assist communities recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Helene.

And Ecuador, where Project HOPE’s medical team of doctors, nurses, and psychologists has provided primary care services for migrants transiting through the country

And Gaza, where our teams have now delivered more than 10 tons of medicines, medical supplies, hygiene kits, and other urgently needed items.

Despite the challenges, we believe 2025 will be a year of progress in reaching global health goals, and our teams are driven to connect more people to quality treatment and care. Here’s why Project HOPE team members and health workers are carrying hope into the new year.

What Gave You Hope in 2024?

Anna Jackson, Program Officer, U.S.

“The storm and flooding caused by Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina brought significant challenges for individuals and communities across the region. Yet, amid the destruction, pain, and trauma, our response team witnessed extraordinary acts of compassion, unity, and kindness. What inspired me most in 2024 was seeing humanity shine through in the face of adversity and being part of the effort to help communities rebuild and heal.”

Dr. Denisse Calle, Program Manager, Ecuador

“In 2024, we took on the challenge of implementing and executing two projects in different cities. None of this would have been possible if we had not counted on the great group of people who work every day and from different areas to make our objectives a reality. This is precisely what has given me hope, knowing that our team is made up of people with an enviable level of professionalism, but who also allow themselves to be touched by the stories of those we assist. That makes all the effort worthwhile and fills us with hope. The hope that our work will alleviate some of the difficulties that people in mobility situations experience until they reach their destinations. The hope of feeling that what is done with love always leaves an indelible mark.”

Roy Sayegh, Regional Program Manager

“People. It is always an inspiration and a motivation to see people from all walks of life come together to support their fellow humans. We saw this most recently in Lebanon, with individuals and groups using the tools and connections at their disposal, including social media, to broadcast the emergency needs and offer support following the massive displacement.

“I reflect on the actions of our awesome country team, as well as our fellow humanitarians and partners at other local and international organizations, civil societies, and government bodies. I witnessed hundreds of thousands of individuals open their doors and their hearts to offer shelters; donations of water, food, pillows, and mattresses; and more. I saw people working around the clock to make sure they did all they could and more to support. Their relentless efforts motivate me every day. I am hopeful and proud given the heartfelt and selfless support people have provided.”

“It is our humanity that brings us together, especially in difficult times. I put my faith in others because they have proven to me that when a common humanity is needed, people will show up to help by the tens, if not hundreds, of thousands. The willingness of people to coordinate and communicate, no matter their profession, gives me hope. I also continue to have hope knowing I am part of a global organization that feels like a global family and community that shows up when you need them, even when you hesitate to ask for support.”

What Hope Do You Carry with You Into 2025?

Vira Topikha, Program Specialist, Ukraine

“I step in 2025 with a great hope that no child, whether in Ukraine or Gaza, ever has to carry the devastating thought that they would join their parents lost to violence, and where no parent weeps at the grave of their child, but instead, tears of joy flow as they watch their children thrive, full of life, laughter, and hope.

“The unbreakable spirit of resilience and compassion that I witness every day in Ukraine and Gaza fuels my hope for the year ahead. Their courage, unity, and unyielding determination have been a beacon of hope, proving that even in the darkest moments, the spirit of humanity cannot be broken.

“The work we do today is more than just humanitarian aid — it is the foundation of hope for peace and healing in 2025.”

Tetiana, Head Nurse of Nikopol City Hospital, Ukraine

Nikopol is a front-line city in the Dnipro region, which is suffering constant shelling and ongoing attacks.

“I have remained in the city throughout the full-scale invasion, drawing immense strength and hope from my colleagues. Despite the ever-present dangers, they continue their essential work, ensuring the well-being of our local population. As Head Nurse at a hospital that has stayed operational, I strive to be a steady example for my team, showing resilience in the face of adversity.

“What also sustains my hope is the strength of our local community. Despite the constant shelling, families — many with young children — choose to stay. They support one another, hold fast to the shared dream of peace, and maintain a deep belief that a better future will emerge. Their courage and solidarity give me the conviction that, no matter how long it takes, we will endure and overcome.

“Equally vital is the support we receive from international organizations. Knowing that we are not alone in this struggle — that we have partners standing with us — reinforces our hope.”

Corina Martinez, Country Director, Mexico

“It gives me hope to see and listen to the Project HOPE Mexico team doing their activities in the community, with young people, doing tests, giving information. I see the passion and commitment with which they do things and that also lets me see that there is still a lot to do, to contribute to a better country and world. We want this world to be a better place to live and enjoy.”
